Re: Things that REALLY get on your nerves

One of those zero ratings was me, unfortunately. I didn't notice that skull level was labeled as art until after I went back to the gallery listing, otherwise I would have rated it much higher. It was really cool looking and deserves a better rating than it has. I'm going to go in from a couple of d...

Re: Missile dodging techniques - What do you do?

That depends on the level. Lots of designers are fond of using so many missile launchers that you can't shoot down every missile and have to dodge.

Also, even if you can shoot all the missiles down, it's sometimes more efficient to lure them off screen so more of your bullets can hit the boss.

Re: Music?

Allowing level creators to upload their own music would be a bad idea because of copyright issues. The moment someone uploads a copyrighted song, MD is liable for aiding and abetting copyright infringement. Still, it would be cool if we had some music. If MD got permission to use some good tracks, i...

Re: Campaign Option for levels?

A lot of people don't seem to know how to link a series together, so it's still probably worth having the explanation now that it's possible.

Bonus tip: when saving the later levels in your series, you can mark them hidden, so the only way for anyone to get there is to beat the previous ones.

Re: Things that REALLY get on your nerves

Hey, actual forum posts again! Woo-hoo! Anyway, my number one per peeve is unbeatable levels. I don't just mean the ones where some combination of inhuman skill and a slow graphics card would theoretically let someone win; I'm talking about those levels where the core is off the screen, or surrounde...

Re: My best levels.

Wow, Narf, you've sure got a lot of levels! There's no way I'm playing through all 117 of them again just to pick my top 3, but I did play some, including all your highest-rated and most recent ones. Top three: Deathspider (one of the few levels I've bookmarked so I can come back and replay it.) Min...

I used to use the "Expert" controls but found keyboard movement and mouse aiming to be much better for my style of play. Zeke brings up a good point, though; not everybody uses the same control mode. It could be an interesting "meta-puzzle" to make players change their controls i...

Hmmm. Could you describe in more detail what you mean? If you're talking about parts that would rotate to face the mouse instead of facing the player's ship, I'm not sure that many designers would use them because they would give the player too much control over the enemy ship. But there might be so...

Heh. Yeah, on pretty much every level I try to leave at least one weapon in case that (profanity censored) twinrapid coregun is going to start hosing me down when all the other weapons are gone. Even though that first level was just a few weapons stuck on a core, at least the core rotates, and there...

Those two levels are actually fairly good, IMHO. They're maybe a little amateurish, but still a cut above most of the other stuff currently out there. Please make more! I encourage you to explore moving parts and triggers, too. I have to ask, though... was that you who rated the second level 100%? I...

Cool, Mouzi. :)

And yeah, I agree that Angel level was really good! I rated it a 90, and I rarely rate anything above a 60 these days.

Just the best level so far!

Holy crap, Mouzi!

Your "Just a Level" is amazing! You can never again claim to be bad at level design.

If that's your contest entry, then everybody else has a huge challenge on their hands!

I haven't used the editor in a while, so I had to go back and look, but x and y in the text editor are actually offsets from the parent. In your example, is the parent located at 454,175? The graphical editor looks like it calculates the absolute coordinates and displays them in the info box, but I'...

It looks like the newly released FF3 does this even without an extension. It just leaves a thin white line at the top, and if you move your mouse there your toolbar shows up, but other than that it hides the browser completely.

Good point! I hadn't thought of the effect my version would have on boss movement.
