Need help making boss

Okay, I have this boss idea in my mind, but my plans to make it work are messing up. Does anybody know how tomake a tentacle retract and extend? I know it involves differing horizontal motion, but it just doesn't work right. Please, someone make an example?

I would rather see an example of what you're trying to do and what you're coding. Are you trying to make a tentacle swinging from side to side or expanding outwards in a straight line and then going back in?

I want it to extend straight forward, and sort of:

If you want it to extend part by part it's a bit more complex.
