I wouldn't scrap this; it's useful for skills practice. But I agree it's kind of pointless for expert players. I don't agree that levels like this are "almost impossible" though; there are so many explosions going off that you can keep your starter shield going as long as you want, while you get to a sweet spot. If there's no sweet spot, usually you can watch the pattern and find a place where you can make one if you start firing at the right time. After that, it's cake.
Look, instead of trying to change the number of lives, just scrap it. a giant mine field is boring, is almost impossible, and has safespots everywhere.
